Dortmund hosted Mainz at Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund, Saturday (16/10/2021), in the 8th week of the Bundesliga. The hosts appear to dominate.
Opta noted that Dortmund had 68 percent possession of the ball, compared to 32 percent for the visitors. Dortmund also had more shots, which was 11 [5 shots on target] compared to 5 from Mainz.
Since the first minute, Dortmund pressed Mainz. As a result, a quick goal was obtained through Marco Reus’ feet, after his left foot shot sent the ball into the Mainz goal. Dortmund lead 1-0.
Dortmund practically controlled the first half. Several opportunities were obtained through Thomas Meunier and Julian Brandt, but did not produce a second goal.
At the end of the first half, Haaland had a chance to score. Receiving feedback from Donyell Malen, his shot from inside the penalty box can still be muted by Robin Zentner. The score remained until the break.
In the second half, Borussia Dortmund could add a goal through the white point. That was after Mainz 05 defender Silvan Widmer made a handball and it was proven after a VAR check. Erling Haaland became the executor, and was able to subdue Zentner. The score becomes 2-0.
Mainz just snapped after that goal. Dortmund, who began to lower the pressure, used Mainz to turn pressing.
After several threats were spread, Mainz was finally able to break into Dortmund’s goal. In the 87th minute, Jonathan Burkardt broke into Gregor Kobel’s goal through his right foot kick in the penalty box. The score became 1-2, and lasted until the game broke up.
